Philomathia Center expands Berkeley's energy efforts

“The Philomathia Foundation has made a key difference to our campuswide efforts in energy and climate research.”

— Graham Fleming, Vice Chancellor for Research

The word “philomathia” means love of learning, and the foundation that bears that name has been true to its meaning. Through its engagement and generosity, the Philomathia Foundation has been paying forward a passion for education.

Established in 2012 within the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI), the Philomathia Center represents the enduring partnership between UC Berkeley and the Philomathia Foundation in support of improving humankind through the creative application of technology, independent thinking, and education.

The center’s offerings bring together new and existing programs that showcase its dedication to BECI’s energy-related efforts, including the Philomathia Fellows program, bringing graduates of leading Ph.D. programs to Berkeley for cutting-edge research; the Innovation Seed Fund, giving Cal researchers the opportunity for exploratory work; the annual Philomathia Forum on Energy and Environment; the Philomathia Chair in Alternative Energy; and Graduate Fellowships in the Environmental Sciences. In addition, the Philomathia Foundation is also providing generous support for the Kavli Energy NanoScience Institute.

“The Philomathia Foundation has made a key difference to our campuswide efforts in energy and climate research,” says Vice Chancellor for Research Graham Fleming, “and the partnership with the foundation continues to be extremely helpful in informing and refining our vision for this critical area.”
