Enhancing our understanding of national security
“It is an honor to be the first holder of this chair, for which I will forever be in debt.”
A renowned expert in national security, Professor Michael Nacht (pictured) has held high positions in both academia and government — including assistant secretary of defense for global strategic affairs in the Obama administration. During his years as dean of Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, he befriended Tom Schneider ’58, M.B.A. ’62, an alumnus and trustee with whom he shares varied interests, from sports to national security to public education.
Appointed in 2011 to the Thomas and Alison Schneider Chair in Public Policy, the professor says the chair helps to support his wide-ranging activities on campus, which include teaching courses on national security and research on nuclear energy and cyber security. “It is an honor to be the first holder of this chair,” says Professor Nacht, “for which I will forever be in debt.”
