• Bravo for Yale and Harvard, but what about the rest?
  USA Today publishes an Op-Ed written by Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau comparing financial aid offerings at private and public universities and calling for "public-private partnerships to create endowments that will ensure access for all students, regardless of family income, to attend public universities."

• Craigslist to establish first endowed faculty chair in new media
  UC Berkeley announced plans to establish the first endowed faculty chair at the Berkeley Center for New Media with a donation of $1.6 million from craigslist, one of the most popular Web sites in the world.

• $113 million gift, UC Berkeley's largest ever, to support 100 endowed faculty chairs
  This gift represents a turning point in the financing of public higher education, providing endowment support that will help to close the funding gap between the nation's preeminent public university and its elite private peers, according to UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau.

• New teaching, research building gets go-ahead
  The UC Board of Regents approved the construction of a new facility on the UC Berkeley campus that will house teaching and research focused on the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease.

• Chancellor announces program to assist needy students with financial aid
  A new program initiated by UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau will double the impact of personal gifts made by members of the campus community to UC Berkeley endowment funds that provide needy undergraduate and graduate students with financial aid.

• BP selects UC Berkeley to lead $500 million energy research consortium
  Global energy firm BP announced that it has selected UC Berkeley, in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to lead an unprecedented $500 million research effort to develop new sources of energy and reduce the impact of energy consumption on the environment.

• Atkins Foundation pledges $10 million to Center for Weight and Health
  The Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation has pledged $10 million to the Center for Weight and Health at the University of California, Berkeley, to support nutrition research and obesity prevention programs.

• Regents vote to certify EIR for southeast campus plan and approve design of student-athlete center
  The UC Board of Regents' Committee on Grounds and Buildings certified the environmental impact report for UC Berkeley's Southeast Campus Integrated Projects and approved the design of the Student-Athlete High Performance Center adjacent to Memorial Stadium.

• Blum Center launches global field initiatives
  The Richard C. Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley announced the selection of its first project initiatives — the East Africa Healthcare Initiative and the Initiative on Safe Water and Sanitation.

• Chancellor names Scott Biddy new vice chancellor for University Relations
  UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau has appointed Scott Biddy as vice chancellor for University Relations, following a nationwide search.

• Florence Fang gift helps the East Asian Library take shape
  UC Berkeley's Chancellor Robert Birgeneau announced the receipt of a $3 million donation from businesswoman Florence Fang, former publisher of the San Francisco Examiner, closing the funding gap for construction of the campus's new C.V. Starr East Asian Library and Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies.

• Gift to campus will create Coleman Fung Risk Management Research Center
  A new center at UC Berkeley devoted to accelerating the development of new risk management-based business practices and tools is being made possible by a $5 million gift from UC Berkeley alumnus Coleman Fung, CEO and founder of Open Link Financial Inc.

• Amgen Foundation gives campus $1 million grant for undergrad science research program
  The Amgen Foundation announced its partnership with UC Berkeley, to provide undergraduate students an opportunity to engage in a fully-funded, hands-on research experience each summer.

• New executive director announced for Blum Center for Developing Economies
  George T. Scharffenberger is the new executive director of the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley, Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau announced. The center was established at UC Berkeley in March 2006 to create a unique and innovative resource for combating global poverty and hunger.
