The Campaign for Berkeley’s Graduate Division

The Graduate Division serves the entire UC Berkeley campus by providing critical guidance and support to 10,000 outstanding graduate students annually. Our master’s and doctoral students are enrolled in more than 100 graduate programs — consistently ranked among the best in the world.

These students come from across California and 70 countries around the world and rely on the Graduate Division for fellowship funding, administrative guidance, resources for writing, research, and teaching, and other assistance as they establish themselves and their families in Berkeley.

Recruiting and retaining exceptional graduate students is critical to the research and teaching missions of the University. Because the best faculty members want to work with the best graduate students, the students play a key role in faculty retention. Graduate students also make a vital academic contribution as instructors and mentors to undergraduate students.

To ensure Berkeley’s ability to attract and keep top master’s and doctoral students, the University seeks to raise $340 million in private support for graduate fellowships campuswide. To meet this goal, the Graduate Division has committed $10 million in payout matching funds for new fellowship endowments.
